Slumdog Millionaire: Excellent….

I never thought I’d be promoting or reviewing a film out here ever, but then Slumdog Millionaire changed all that!! This is one awesome film. If your choice in films hovers around reality stuff like Salaam Bombay, then this is a must-watch!! And even if your tastes do not go this way, even then its a must-watch.

What strikes you most about the entire movie is the poignant black humour that pervades the entire narrative. It is a rather stark depiction of our attitude to various sections of society, be it on the basis of income, social standing, geographical divides and religious beliefs. The tapestry which the story teller weaves around the main story of a game, with the protagonist’s entire life amalgamating into it, left me speechless. It reminds you of an Agatha Christie revelation of a Charles Dickens story.

This movie deserves every award it got. I’m sure this would be a shoo-in at the Oscars, and this time, it will win!!

Fooling around with Picasa

When you’ve developed a narcissitic streak, you tend to go over the top. Blogging about your life can get like that…..

So here’s me fooling around with Picasa, to make me look like a long forgotten memory…….

Cute, ain’t I??? ….. sigh, there’s the Narcissitic streak again….

Laughing, Screaming, Rain and Cricket

Daaadaaa, Dada” …… My ears are still ringing with the refrain of that!!!

Saturday was spent at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, the third day of the first test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. I must tell you, the best way to enjoy a game of cricket is in the stadium, with all the shouting, screaming, the Mexican wave, the sighs and the endless chanting!! “Saaachin, Sachin“!!!

And the best part is when we get into the stadium, and right in front of us are the two greats of Indian Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav “Dada” Ganguly, practicing at the nets!! Just 15 ft away!!! I could not resist whipping out my cell and capturing the moment!!!

Watch as Sachin and Saurav make a display of their superior batting skills. Then just as Sachin starts to leave, for a split second, he turns to us, smiles and walks away. Harbhajan “Bhajji” Singh walks in to our cheers, which he graciously acknowledges. Actually, Bhajji saved the day later in the innings!! As far as Dada is concerned, watch the elegance.

Taking our seats, getting into the patriotic fervour. Trust me, its an experience holding the Tricolor!!

The ecstatic fan – Yours truly – Happy to be here…. as you can see!!!

On day three of a five day match, with India 5 wickets down and after a major buffet of Fried Rice, Curd Rice, Mirchi Bhajjias, Bananas and Ice Cream, Mari was the first to succumb!! His argument later would be that “Sachin was out anyway”. Yeah, right!!!

Tickets to the match: Rs. 280…. Lunch: Rs. 50……. Rain stopping play and watching the covers come on… LIVE?? PRICELESS, Baby!!!!

And the patriots call it a day…. and I’m still going… “Daaada, Dada”

First Video – Flight of a lone Eagle

Most people have a thing for animals….. usually identifying themselves with one of the “beautiful people”. Some love dolphins, jaguars [not the car!!!], snakes and so on.

I would be one of them and have always been fascinated with birds of prey, specifically eagles and falcons. There is something about the pristine way these beauties take to the air, gliding gracefully in an unending ballet of beauty.

So one very gloomy rainy day, it had just rained heavily and the sky was one sheet of gray, unbroken cloud. Not a single bird in the sky. And then all of a sudden, there was this lone eagle in the sky, doing his immaculate dance on a lonely stage.

Circle upon circle of grace, climbing higher and higher and finally disolving into a window of sun in the sheet of cloud….. and there I had my first video for this blog.

Navin Quadros: Unreserved Pigging – Part 1

Sunday is the foodie day for me….. with every meal in the past few months eaten out, eating out isn’t a special thing anymore. However Sundays is different. That’s when I’m a bit relaxed, not much on my mind and I can give myself up to the sheer pleasure of being a gourmand!!

I started off my Sunday pigging in Bangalore with looking for the perfect Chicken Biryani…. most accesible from my home. That meant I needed to reach the place within 20 minutes maximum… that was the first criteria…. (though most will agree in favour of a yummy place called Hyderabadi House, it fails the accesibility test!! But you can’t leave a fantastic biryani out, so more about HH later!!!)

The second criteria was that it should be Chicken Biryani…. if its not available, it doesn’t count.

Sundays also happens to be Church day…. and being the good lil’ catholic boy I am, every Sunday you’d find me in church. So as all good things begin with the Lord, so did my Sunday pigging quest!!

Dakhani Degh [loosely translated as Deccan Cauldron] is a neat restaurant on my way to church. Its a Muslim eatery, so the food being tasty is guaranteed. As far as the palate is concerned, I’ve always had the utmost respect for Muslim eateries. Somehow they’re the final word on non vegetarian food. People familiar with Bade Miyan’s in Colaba, Mumbai and my foodie experience in the Muslim khau-gallis [food bylanes] of old Ahmedabad bear testimony to the fact.

So I settle into the neat ambience, the loud music and the cool air-conditioning, and order my biryani… and a sweet nimbu-pani [lime juice]

The first thing that hit me when the order arrived is the neat way the serving was packed. a shallow bowl, holding just enough biryani for one person, wrapped in cling film. It was a rather novel way of serving a dish, like as if it was a packaged item that came off a production line. So the whole act of opening the Biryani was like opening a present. They serve it with a bowl of raita and a thick and greasy salaan [curry].

When you pull away the cling film, the steaming aroma of basmati rice, clove, cinnamon and star anise will smother you. However, I did not find a physical trace of even one of these spices while eating. I have no idea how they did it, but its a rather mouth watering invitation to the feast.

As I dished some of the hot rice onto my plate, I found the chicken at the bottom. Considering the dish being about an inch and a quarter in depth, how they packed three large pieces of chicken and all that rice is beyond me. The biryani is Hyderabaadi style, so there is no gravy in the rice, its always served seperately….while the rice, though dry, can be relished on its own and needs no additional side dish.

And then the moment of truth………… The first taste that explodes in your mouth is the gentle profusion of pepper. Just right, not too bland, not too peppery. The rice is long slightly aromatic basmati rice, boiled just right, so that it is not too sticky, nor is it raw. There is the generous sprinkling of deep fried onions and masala, which play an eternal hide and seek with the tastebuds.

The pieces of chicken that I got were half a breast, a medium thigh and a large wing. I still wonder how they packed all that so tightly. The meat is very very fresh, judging by how easily the meat came off the bone with a fork. but when I realized that I was not doing justice to the chicken, away went the fork and nature’s contraptions [read fingers] took over. The meat was well infused with the taste of the biryani rice, which suggested the meat being cooked with the rice together.

I usually prefer to serve myself…. its a personal preference. The place has attentive but untrained staff, so if you walk in there expecting the attentiveness of an English Butler waiting on you, think again. You will have to ask them to serve you, fill your glass of water etc etc. But once you let them know what you want, they get it done quickly.

And price?? Well that meal cost me 100 rupees with a tip included. Not bad for a happy stomach and a single diner.

Valentines Day misery

I know it is a bit late to talk about Valentines Day, or too early, depending upon how you look at it. And a highly publicized Festival of Love is the last thing on my mind nowadays, as on anyone’s mind, really!!! But I really had forgotten all about this scene I captured on Valentines Day 2008.

As I’ve always told my friends, Valentine’s Day is a rather taxing time for single people, more so for single men. The preparation to make the eternal declaration of love begins usually a week ahead for eager young bachelors….. however it is more of a sacred duty for guys who aren’t single anymore, those who are either hooked or married. Woe befalls the man whose woman finds out her girlfriend got a bigger, costlier, more sensitive or more symbolic declaration of love as compared to the one she recieved from her man!!!!

And in the complex lives we all live, its difficult to remember all things in life. So…………………….

At 8:30pm on Valentine’s Day, the men made a last ditch attempt at making their women feel at least a bit special…………. It was a scene too precious to lose…. One flower seller, 30 male customers, not enough red roses……. PRICELESS!!!!

Skyscapes – Part Deux

There are certain perks of flying on an evening flight. Other than the supreme magnanimity of forgiving the airline for its inevitable delay, the views outside your window are breathtaking. Flying through thick rainclouds at 30000 ft. and playing hide and seek with the sun, is very simply put, an awe inspiring event.

Also compound that with the fact that a wannabe model sits next to you and insists on doing her claws for one and three quarters of an hour. No, I do not have a pic of her. Compared to the beauties you’ll see below, she was, in a way, inconsequential………..

Presenting, the sea of clouds:

For a wee moment, when I looked out at this scene, it did not strike me that I was at 30k feet above ground. This looked more like skimming the ocean in an amphibious aircraft……..

And finally, the grand masterpiece!!! I like to call this “sunset among the clouds”!!! I’m still in the air, my friends!!!!

It was a humbling experience. Despite the fact that I was defying gravity and essentially doing something that nature did not intend me to do [I mean flying, you perverts]…….. it brought about the revelation that I was so small compared to the universe….. or more exactly, the great blue sky!!!!

Look up to the sky…

The weather in Bangalore allows for a lot of fun. First of all, it is crazily unpredictable. You can essentially have a lottery service asking subscribers to actually bet on the condition every morning. I have had days which started of sunny, and I mean with a clear blue sky….. and then it got a bit cloudy and by the evening, it was drizzling. Next morning I find the roads are all slushy… Its so funny that the weather bureau has already given up on it!!! Going by their standard prediction “Clear skies today. Sporadic showers expected”

But on the other hand, this kind of variance gives one the chance to view some of the best “skyscapes” you could ever find anywhere. And with my trusty ol’ E61, I have absolutely no excuse as lame as “I wish I had a camera right now”!!!

So here are some classic skyscape masterpieces:

This was on a lazy Saturday morning (that’s because Saturdays are an off for me). This sky later brought down the biggest downpour I’ve ever seen in March anywhere!!!!

That’s the same scene when the storm approacheth!!!

I had just gotten off the bus, said thanks to the driver and looked up!!! And there was my religious experience!!!

Barack Obama for Comedian??

I really have to thank Urmi for this one….. I still wonder how I overlooked it!!! I guess when you are in the company of a lovely lady, you kinda lose sense of all other things :-)

Nevertheless, I’m not sure how Mr. Barrack Obama is doing in the US presidential race, but things look real bleak for him in India….. He might just have to thank his stars that Indians do not influence the US elections too much.

So when a large and well known bookstore ends up putting “The Audacity of Hope” (Mr. Obama’s autobiography) in the “Humour” section with the likes of Mr Bill Cosby, Calvin and Hobbes and MAD, you wonder about Mr. Obama’s percieved role in the future of India…………..

And as Urmi will bear witness, this is not a doctored picture and neither is that book there by mistake. Look closely and you’d see the spine of a second copy right next to it!!! Mr. Obama is officially “humourous reading” in this bookstore!!!!

I cannot comment on Mr. Obama’s chances as President, but as far as his chances as Comedian go, I’d say they seem bright in India…….

PS: Truth be told, after I took the picture, I actually toyed with the idea of finding Hillary Clinton’s books and moving them next to Obama on the shelf!! Trouble was, I could not find any of Hillary’s books in the whole store!!! Poor Hillary, at least Obama has a presence in India!!!!

The lookalike…..

Someone pointed this out, so I had to mention it………………

See the resemblance with a picture in the immediate past??
